History of Avid Technologies, Inc.
Avid introduced its very first digital nonlinear editing program in 1989. The Media Composer system was revolutionary in making it possible for faster and more creative ways of working with film and video than what the norm was at the time.
Avid bought BASYS Automation Systems in 1994 and also SofTECH Systems, Inc. These two companies where the most popular providers of newsroom computer systems. Also in 1994, Open Media Framework, or OPF, Interchange was introduced by Avid. OPF is a standard file format which alowed the exchange of digital media between different applications and platforms which is a key component of digtal post-production.
Avid became more powerful in the audio world when they merged with Digidesign, Inc. in 1995. In 1998, Avid bought Softimage, Inc from Microsoft to help with its television and 3-D developments. As part of the deal, Microsoft earned 9.1% of Avids shares of stock.
At the turn of the new millenium. Avid came out with a new internet technology that allowed both corporate and enteratinment industries to broadcast digital media over the internet. Also, Avid bought The Motion Factory, which was an industry that specializes in 3-D media for games and the web.
In 2001, Avid is stronger than ever. They provide many different products for many different budgets. They are still making more developments on digital editing, and are going to be constantly pushing the bar and making things happen that were once thought impossible.
